Transparency [US Government]

ROLE: UX + UI Design | Front-End Development | Data Visualization

Under the guidance of the Obama Administration’s Government Transparency Initiative, the State of Utah brought me in to concept, solve and deliver the most useful, lightweight, and traversable interactive viewer for over 23 million financial data points.

Users can organically search or filter data at integral levels by by Organization, Category, Fund, Name, or transactions. With every visit, users can create a customized experience and dataset that specifically meet their needs, print or share the information with colleagues and the public.

“Transparency and the rule of law will be the touchstones of this presidency.”
President Barack Obama

Since it’s launch in 2009, the project has facilitated over 601,000 unique searches, 1,300 customized dataset downloads, and well over 1 million visitors. Through the platform, citizens, public advocacy groups and journalists have uncovered and reported on government spending practices that have lead to social and policy change.

After a year of stable performance, we released the platform as an open-source codebase which has since been used by 15 states.
